Hunting Tower seeks Gr 1 double in Champions Cup on All Stars Day

HUNTING Tower will have to overcome an outside draw if he is to complete a Grade 1 double at Clairwood on Saturday.

The Vodacom Durban July winner contests the R500 000 Dubai Racing Club Champions Cup over 1800m does, however, have the advantage of being one of the better-weighted runners in the field.

Charles Laird’s runner is the top weight for the race but only 5kg separates the entire fields in this conditions event. With a merit racing of 112, Hunting Tower should be conceding large chunks of weight to all but three of the runners – three-year-olds Kildonan, Biarritz and Dynamite Mike.

However, the fact that he has to jump from draw NO 15 may well negate any of his weight advantage.

Kildonan may have disappointed in the Durban July but if the handicappers have got it right, he is by far the best-weighted runner in this event. He has a MR of 115, the highest in the race, and has just 55kg to carry.

But he is drawn outside of Hunting Tower at No 16 and that will not make matters too easy for jockey Weichong Marwing. Last year Kildonan won the Premier’s Champion Stakes and trainer Mike de Kock will no doubt be keen to see his charge back in the No 1 box again this year.

Dynamite Mike was considered unlucky by many to not have finished a little closer to the leaders in the Durban July but he will get a good chance here to redeem himself. He will probably prefer this shorter distance and from draw No 9, he has to be one for the shortlist.

Biarritz appears to love this course loves this course and has run two crackers at Clairwood. Last year, with the affliction of the worst draw, in the field, he came from clouds to run second Kildonan in the Premier’s Champion Stakes and had the talented Divine Jury behind him in third place.

Then last month, in the Grade 1 Gold Challenge, Biarritz came from way back to run a 0,85 lengths fourth to Succesful Bidder. Kildonan was just a head in front of him and Biarritz is now 1,5kg better off.

Equal Image, who won this race last year, is back fro a second crack and he has come to form at just the right time. He is also not well drawn at No 12 and may struggle to beat his younger opponents.

Argonaut and Kilcoy Castle set up a delicious clash in this year’s Premier’s Champion Stakes over 1600m. Geoff Woodruff’s runner, Argonaut, could not have been more impressive when winning the Golden Horseshoe (G1) on Durban July day at Greyville and it comes as no surprise that bookmakers have priced him up as the 1-1 favourite.

But Kilcoy Castle has impressed in his two starts to date and with the Sean Tarry stable in excellent form, this is gearing up to be a great match up.

The Thekwini Fillies Strake also looks a match race between Gilded Minaret and the Cape Town-based Nania. De Kock’s Gilded Minaret made it two wins from two starts when storming home345 in the Golden Slipper at Greyville but Joey Ramsden’s runner was equally impressive when capturing a Juvenile Plate at Clairwood over 1500m earlier this month. State Factor from the Michael Azzie stable is the only other runner at single figures in the betting.

Also run on Saturday are the Dubai International Racing Carnival Derby and the Dubai Racing Club Oaks, both over 2400m.
