Kildonan looks good value at 5-2

KILDONAN might not have drawn that well for the R500 000 Dubai Racing Club Champions Cup at Clairwood on Saturday, but the Rich Man’s Gold’s current odds of 5-2 look pretty generous, given the high regard his connections have of him.

The tactics used with the three-year-old in the recent Vodacom Durban July, when he finished a 4.45-length 12th behind Hunting Tower, were disastrous due to a painfully slow pace. Jockey Weichong Marwing found himself at the back of the big field and his mount did well to make up quite a few lengths on the leaders in the short straight.

There was much talk before the July about whether Kildonan would stay the 2200m of the July. Some will still question his stamina in the wake of that race, but Kildonan will answer his critics on Saturday. He has always enjoyed racing up with the speed, so will probably be bounced out from that wide stall to race either handy or even in front. He’ll either keep rolling, or not.

He enjoys the left-hand Clairwood circuit, having scored his first Grade 1 win at the Durban track at this same fixture last year. He beat Biarritz by 1.75 lengths in the Premier’s Champion Stakes. A year later his rival is 1.5kg better off and St John Gray’s Count Dubois colt, who is on offer at 8-1, will have many supporters from a better draw than Kildonan.

Hunting Tower and Jagged Ice, who were separated by a long neck in the Durban July, are the only other runners quoted in single figures.

Jagged Ice (2kg better off with Hunting Tower) is well drawn at No 7 and is second favourite for the Champions Cup, while his rival, who will bounce from No 15 stall is next on offer at 5-1.

Two other Grade 1 races will be run on Saturday and the horses who won the juvenile features on Durban July day, Argonaut and Gilded Minaret, have both drawn support.

Argonaut, who beat stable companion Profit Report in the Golden Horseshoe over 1400m, opened at even money but that was snapped up and he’s now in the red at 9-10.

Unbeaten Gilded Minaret, winner of the 1400m Golden Slipper, shortened more dramatically from 12-10 to 9-10.
