LIONS AND FOOD PARCELS
Etienne Louw: This time of the year many families will need the help of donations to satisfy their hunger.
On Saturday morning at the offices of Tutela premises in Alberton members of Alberton Lions Club helped to prepare more than a hundred food parcels for the needy in Alberton.
Aided by a large donation from the Horseracing Channel, TellyTrack (Phumelela Gaming), the collections of assorted foodstuffs were packed by members of the Alberton Lions.
This was the second time this year that TellyTrack has been involved with charity work at Tutela Alberton and Alberton Lions.
One of the main focuses of the Alberton Lions, and indeed, Lions International in general, is the support for needy families, and no more so than in Alberton.
They raise funds during the year to purchase dry food items in bulk as and when the funds become available, and two or three times a year, these food items are sorted and packed into a month’s supply for 1 family.
“Alberton Lions are assisted in this by the Tutela Alberton organization, who identify the disadvantaged families in Alberton and surrounds, and apportion the food regularly to around 20 families every month” said Mr Ian King, President of Alberton Lions.
The organization also supplies food to support a feeding scheme in Katlehong, where around 150 children are given a meal twice a week – frequently the only meal they will receive in that day.
In addition, they assist four crèches in La Rochelle Raceview and Tulisa Park with regular donations of food for their pre-schoolers, as well as Christmas parties, toys and other items to enhance their daily lives.
Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.4 million members in approximately 47,000 clubs in more than 230 countries and geographical areas around the world.
“We had the majority of our Lions packing this morning at the Tutela premises, which is one of our favourite fun ‘work days’, and we normally pack around 100 bags at each event. A rewarding working day indeed.” Ian King, President of Alberton Lions said.
Tutela have been rendering services since April 1984. “We are very pleased with the donation of TellyTrack and the help of Alberton Lions Club.” Belinda Lourens from Tutela Alberton said.
