Muzi takes lead in title race

Ken Nicol: Both jockey and trainer titles could be heading for the equivalent of a thrilling three way photo as the 2018/19 season enters its final six weeks.

On the riding front, following a treble at happy hunting ground Flamingo Park on Monday, Muzi Yeni has retaken the lead as he reached 185 wins for the season.

Hong Kong bound defending champion Lyle Hewitson is making a spirited defence of his crown, and currently sits on 184 winners.

Interestingly he has already equalled the number that took him to the title a year ago, but is going to need a lot more this time around.

Meanwhile without exerting himself too much, Anton Marcus lurks ominously just off the pace on 180, and if tempted into making a final push could prove hard to deny.

Both Yeni and Hewitson have some attractive mounts at Kenilworth on Tuesday, while Marcus sits on the sideline.

The training crown is determined by stakes, and Sean Tarry leads the way on R22,874,863. Mike de Kock is hot on his heels with R21,922,038, and current champion Justin Snaith has R18,653,663.

The front two have a handy gap, but with over R9 million up for grabs on Vodacom July day, and Snaith renowned for concentrating on the big occasions, that could change quickly.
