Good rides for Maia

Good rides for Maia

Larry Foley: With a number of top jockeys out of action, Ruan Maia can have another good day at Kranji on Saturday.

While only one meeting into the new season, the premiership tables make for fascinating reading with Jerome Tan sitting on top of the trainers’ log with two wins.

Tan only managed 15 wins in 2020 so while we can safely assume he won’t be on top of the table for long, he can enjoy his moment in the sun for a few days longer.

What was interesting is that thanks to a dead-heat, 10 other trainers managed one win to open the season, and with Lee Freedman soon to depart for Australia, the training ranks do look even which make for good racing.

With the 2020 Champion Jockey Vlad Duric enjoying an enforced holiday, it was Ruan Maia with three winners who took the honours on the opening day and with Louis Beuzelin riding two, the Jockey Championship in 2021 will be fascinating.

Simon Kok – champion apprentice in 2020 – is also enjoying a “holiday”, leaving Hakim and Iskandar to open their respective accounts on day one and, with some new talent in the junior ranks in Jerlyn Seow, the junior ranks will also be very competitive in 2021.

But “one swallow does not make a summer”, so expect the big guns to come to the fore and it may be Maia who stamps his authority on Saturday with another strong book of rides from CAVALLO COURT in the opener to STYLE in the last.

Race 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8

Race 1

A very solid betting affair to welcome back Saturday racing in 2021 and while we can make a case for most of the field, two Class droppers in CAVALLA COURT and CLARTON TREASURE look the two to be on. In particular CAVALLA COURT who had looked due with a light weight in Class 4 and the drop to the bottom grade with Maia up suggests he is very hard to hold out. CLARTON TREASURE has also looked due in both Class 5 and Class 4 and his last effort in better Company has him right in this. TIGER LEAP is having his first run in Class 5 after some good Maiden form and that will hold up here given he placed behind SPECIAL OPS last start and that form has been franked. SMOKE AND MIRRORS down in grade, AWESOME CONQUEROR and recent winners RED RIDING WOOD and MILITARY CHAIRMAN can all be considered, while STAR EFFECT is well and truly due and will give a sight. Betting Strategy – CAVALLA COURT win.

1 BIG DAY * Impossible on form but drops in Class and could improve with blinkers off. 50

2 CAVALLA COURT *** Significant drop in Class given nice form in better Company and hard to hold out here. 4.00

3 CLARTON TREASURE *** Foot on the till in both Class 4 and Class 5 Company of late and hard to hold out. 3.80

4 SMOKE AND MIRRORS *** Disappointing at his last two starts but two efforts prior in Class 4 good enough to follow here. 20

5 STAR EFFECT *** In form, step back up to mile suits and will look the winner at some stage in straight. 8.00

6 AWESOME CONQUEROR *** Honest in both Class 4 and 5 of late and can figure. 12

7 TIGER LEAP *** Maiden who will very much appreciate Class 5 Company and can win. 6.00

8 LIM’S PRIDE ** Form reads badly but last win was in in similar affair so improves lengths stepping up in trip. 20

9 MILITARY CHAIRMAN ** In form, won trip, track and Class two starts back and has to be respected. 12

10 UPGRADED ** Looks impossible on form and drawn wide but did it tough last start and should improve on the turf. 50

11 AUSPICIOUS DAY * Gate one helps but lost all form. 100

12 EL MACHO ** Maiden who put in an improved effort last start and can follow. 20

13 RED RIDING WOOD ** Gate a concern but always an each-way show over the mile in this Company. 12

14 POROSHIRI ** Disappointing last start so gets another slight gear change. Goes OK when right. 33

15 IRON FIST * Never involved on wet track last start but won three back so watch market. 33

Race 2

With gear changes aplenty, a debutante who looks handy and improvers on trial form, the tote will be an excellent guide to what looks a weak maiden on paper. But as it stands, ENTERTAINER will very much appreciate a solid first up run in Class 4 Company and given he has placed twice in maidens and gets Maia from gate 1, he should give a sight. EIGHT BALL was disappointing on debut but has trialled well since with blinkers off and tongue-tie on so he is well worth a look from gate 3 with support likely. SHOWBOUND and DON’T TELL TILLY both disappointed last start but have trialled well since so have to be respected, while BEN WADE looks the best of the debutantes on trial form and he is worth a look with CC Wong to ride. Keep TRAVIS and both emergencies safe. Betting Strategy – ENTERTAINER win.

1 ENTERTAINER *** Appreciates solid first up run in Class 4 and best form was in this Company. Can win from gate 1 with Maia up. 3.00

2 SHOWBOUND *** Disappointing last start but has trialled well since and can consider. 6.00

3 TRAVIS ** Needs to find a length or two and drawn wide but pay to keep safe in this weak field. 12

4 BEN WADE *** NZ-bred 4YO who showed enough at a recent trial with blinkers to consider on debut with market best guide. 6.00

5 DON’T TELL TILLY *** Only battled last start and drawn wide but trials good enough to think she has a say on the Poly. 12

6 CRYSTAL STAR * Needs to find a few lengths. 33

7 KANTHAKA * The odd OK runs have been in equally weak fields and easier to ignore. 33

8 BRIGHT FUTURE * Did it tough on debut so could improve with blinkers added. 20

9 CITY HALL * Shown little at the races but gets blinkers added so could improve. 33

10 EIGHT BALL *** Hit the wall on debut and disappointing but has trialled well since sans blinkers with tongue-tie added and happy to follow. 4.00

11 LIM’S HOPEFULLY * Australian-bred 3YO who hasn’t shown up at the trials. 50

12 WEDNESDAY ** Nothing on debut but gets blinkers and recent trial solid enough to think he improves. 20

13 MIGHTY VAIN *** Resuming after a bleeding attack and could give a sight on the back of two good trials. 8.00

14 SUPREME FIGHTER *** Race form reads badly but excuse snot to finish closer last start and always trial like a good horse so can improve. 20

Race 3

A cracking race with some serious Class 4 types heading to the 1200m start including TRADING POST first up after a handy Guineas run. The now 4YO won over 1000m at his only start in Australia before winning at his Singapore debut over 1200m in this Company. His subsequent run over 1400m and the Guineas mile were good without threatening but this race first up looks ideal and he will be hard to hold out. PATTAYA looks the benchmark though and from gate 1, he gets a chance to knock in a well-deserved win after finding only one better at his last three starts. Plenty of others to watch with STREET CRY SUCCESS having excuses last start in this grade after his ambitious Group 1 run, while MR HOOPER improves with blinkers added back in his winning grade. SACRED JUDGEMENT too honest to leave out and wins without surprising and go wide in exotics. Betting Strategy – TRADING POST win.

1 MR HOOPER *** Drawn a tad sticky but significant drop in Class and gets blinkers added so can win. 12

2 TRADING POST *** Resuming after solid Guineas run. Won on debut in Australia and Singapore. Big show. 3.00

3 ABSOLVIDO ** Never got going last start but will be running on strongly if on song. 33

4 STREET CRY SUCCESS *** Traffic excuses in similar affair last start after ambitious Lion City Cup run. Can win on the back of a good trial. 8.00

5 SACRED JUDGEMENT *** Resuming. Yet to win in Singapore but rarely runs baldy so must be respected. 6.00

6 PATTAYA *** Super honest and looks the benchmark with gate 1 a bonus. 4.00

7 DESPACITO * Struggling. 100

8 BEER GARDEN ** Drawn wide but should be running home strongly if race run to suit. 20

9 CHAMPAGNE FINALE ** Better over longer but won this trip and Class in driving rain last start so have to respect. 20

10 COUNT ME IN * Freshened by a solid recent trial but drawn wide and this race has depth. 50

11 MR SHOWMAN ** Broke maiden status in a weak race but won well enough to follow as will be more than competitive in Class 4. 12

12 LIZAZ * Showed nothing first up and prefer others. 33

13 TRIPLE BOWL ** Hard to fault honest form and can win but will need luck from wide gate. 20

14 SATELLITE WARRIOR * Tough to follow and drawn wide so pay to wait for Class 5. 50

15 WILD BEE ** Ran on well to be in the place mix last start and knows how to win so pay to keep safe. 20

16 IRONCLAD ** Like to see over 1400m but appreciates first up run and switch to turf. Value. 33

Race 4

A relatively weak maiden and over the tricky Poly mile, a nightmare for punters. In saying that, SUN HOLIDAY is due to win, gets a canny 3kg claim and from gate 5 should get every possible chance. Likewise, QIJI STAR and SILKARDO have all been due of late and while they can put in a bad run and have drawn wide, they should figure with luck in running, while MASTER SOMMELIER – who was disappointing last start – was also due prior and he get his chance from gate 2 with no weight. The interesting runner is ORACLE. The Nostradamus 3YO has shown nothing at three career starts but the poly mile may be his caper on trial form with blinkers off. Go wide in exotics. Betting Strategy – SUN HOLIDAY win, saver on ORACLE.

1 SUN HOLIDAY *** Overdue to win but handles the Poly and right in this finish with handy 3kg claim. 2.50

2 ORACLE *** Race form terrible but always trials like a good horse and could be the big improver sans blinkers over the Poly mile. 20

3 SUN COUNCIL ** Placed in a weak on last start over 1200m when blinkers went on and can follow. 12

4 WIND RHAPSODY * Battler. 50

5 SUNDAY * Not a mile away last start but needs to improve. 50

6 BEAUTY SEVEN SEVEN * Resuming. Gets blinkers and tongue-tie on but struggles. 100

7 QIJI STAR *** Drawn wide but in honest form, handles the Poly and should figure with luck in running. 5.00

8 SILKARDO *** Always some show but having first start on the Poly so take on trust. 5.00

9 SILVER SWORD ** Resuming after excuses for poor run last start (heart irregularity) and has shown ability so keep safe with blinkers off. 20

10 WINNING POWER * Tongue-tie after rider reported issues last start but have to take on trust. 50

11 MASTER SOMMELIER *** Super disappointing as favourite last start but due prior and have to respect with no weight from gate 2. 5.00

12 SPEED RACER ** Showing glimpses and recent trial good so could improve again stepping up to the mile. 20

13 MILIMILI * Battles as a rule. 50

14 NEW GARDEN ** Ran on well last start, gate 1 helps and can include if he gets a start. 20

Race 5

Another race that could get ugly and with no real standouts in the 12 confirmed starters, the first emergency in JUST STARS looks the one to beat if he gets a start. Yes, he is a maiden but is backing up after looking the winner late in a similar affair last start and a repeat will have him hard to beat with gate 6 a factor. Of those guaranteed a start, MINHAAJ is in form and will look the winner at some stage, while PAPERBACK TROOPER is another who is usually in the mix in similar races to this. You can also make a case for BROADWAY SUCCESS down in grade, SUPER RAY from gate 2, STAR BULLET after excuses last start and also HOUSEHOLD DYNASTY first up after a long spell. One to watch at value in LIFE IS GAMBLE who looks horribly out of form but gets blinkers and a trial with headgear suggests that may be his caper. Betting Strategy – LIFE IS GAMBLE each-way.

1 BROADWAY SUCCESS *** Looks horribly out of form and yet to win on the Poly but always a winning show in Class 5 so keep safe. 6.00

2 SUPER RAY *** Excuses when resuming after bleeding attack. Can consider on form prior with gate 2 a factor. 9.00

3 BRIGHT SUN ** Did it tough enough last start to forgive and can consider in what is a suitable race with blinkers back on. 12

4 DIAMOND MINE ** Ran on solidly as expected when dropping to this Class last start and expect much the same. 20

5 STAR BULLET *** Form reads badly and yet to win in Singapore but excuses last start (lame, respiratory) and race suits so happy to keep safe at odds sans blinkers. 20

6 MINHAAJ *** Always a winning show in races like this and will look the winner at some stage. 4.00

7 HOUSEHOLD DYNASTY *** Resuming. Maiden who showed enough in his first campaign to keep safe first up with tongue-tie off and blinkers on. 8.00

8 M ELEVEN ** Won a weak one two back and wide gate will test again here. 20

9 LIFE IS GAMBLE *** Race form terrible but gets blinkers and best recent trial was with headgear so keep safe at odds. 20

10 PAPERBACK TROOPER *** Always a winning show in races like this and gate 1 helps. 4.00

11 NINETYSIX WARRIOR * Maiden who battles as a rule but may appreciate Class 5 Company. 20

12 FEROCIOUS ** Resuming. Hard to follow but recent trials good enough to keep safe. 20

13 JUST STARS *** Maiden backing up after being in the mix in similar affair last start. Hard to beat. 3.00

Race 6

History could be made in this race with WW Cheah (RUNMINDERBINDERRUN) hoping to ride his first winner in Singapore and Jerlyn Seow (BIG REGARDS) hoping for her first win anywhere. Cheah is probably on the best horse in the race and from gate 3 you would imagine he could box seat RUNMINDERBINDERRUN and get the Kranji monkey off his back. Seow is on BIG REGARDS who was in the winning mix over 2000m last start and from gate 1 he should be close enough in running to have every chance dropping back to the mile. Louis Beuzelin is on JUPITER DRAGON and while he only battled last start, he normally runs on strongly and he is the hardest to hold out. GRATUS can disappoint but just missed last start so pay to keep following and include numbers 2, 7, 11 and 13 in exotics. Betting Strategy – RUNMINDERBINDERRUN win.

1 RUNMINDERBINDERRUN *** Freshened after tough run and always a winning show with mile ideal. 4.00

2 SCOOBY DOO ** Maiden who is tough to follow but ran on well enough last start to keep safe here. 20

3 STAR FIFTYTWO *** Only win was over 1200m but ran on well last start over 1400m and goes well for this hoop. 6.00

4 STORM TO WIN * Only battled at his last couple but form prior solid so can include in exotics. 20

5 JUPITER DRAGON *** Disappointing last start but will be running on strongly if race run to suit. 6.00

6 ALLEGRO * Gets blinkers added and could improve on battling recent form. 20

7 SMILING PROUD ** Disappointing last start and drawn wide but versatile and can include in exotics with tongue-tie off. 20

8 OFFICIAL * Won a weak one two back on the poly and would need support before considering here. 20

9 BIG REGARDS *** Ran on to be in the mix last start over 2000m and can follow from gate 1 with 4kg claim. 8.00

10 GRATUS *** Ran on super to just miss in similar affair last start and pay to follow. 8.00

11 SILVER WAY ** Best runs of late have been when leading and a mist for exotics with positive ride expected. 12

12 VICTORY JOY * Battles as a rule. 50

13 SPEEDY ROSE ** Drawn wide but has been running on well in maiden company and expect much the same. 12

14 FLASH THE FLAG * Batted from wide gate last start and easier to ignore. 33

15 WHIZZY WALTZZY * Runs on when in the mood but easier to ignore. 50

16 GALLANT BLACK * Gets tongue-tie but battling. 50

Race 7

This looks a top-heavy Class 4 Poly mile and the top weight LEATHERHEAD looks the horse to beat. The 5YO comes off a disappointing run over 2000m on the turf but this race suits on the back of a nice trial and with Maia up from gate 4, he gets his chance. It took ASAAD a run over the mile to show his best in Singapore when winning two starts back. The former Argentinean backed that up with a solid front running effort on the turf and expect much the same with Poly no issue on breeding. BUSHIDO first up after a spell is the other that looks a serious winning hope. The Japanese-bred 5YO won at his last start in a similar affair to this and although drawn wide and with an extra 4.5kg to carry, he must be respected. MIGHTY EMPEROR the improver at odds back on the poly with blinkers added and numbers 7, 8, 10 and 13 for exotics. Betting Strategy – LEATHERHEAD win.

1 LEATHERHEAD *** Tough to follow but very much appreciates being back on the Poly and can win with good recent trial under his belt. 3.00

2 ASAAD *** Found form this trip, will handle the Poly and claim helps with forward run expected. 5.00

3 BUSHIDO *** Resuming after winning a similar affair last start. Has to carry an extra 4.5 from a wide gate but can win. 4.00

4 MY EVEREST * Appreciates first up run but query the trip and market best guide. 33

5 SUN NOBLE * No. 100

6 FORESTO * Only battling of late but better suited back on the Poly and can improve with blinkers on. 20

7 MATSURIBAYASHI ** Wide gate a concern but ran on well enough last start and Poly mile suits. 12

8 SUN ACE ** Battled away in the place mix from a wide gate last start and expect much the same. 8.00

9 SUN MONARCH * Resuming with blinkers but impossible on form. 50

10 MARIKH ** Only battled with support last start in this Company after maiden win but worth another look on the Poly from gate 1. 12

11 MIGHTY EMPEROR ** Ignore last two runs on the turf as a much better horse on the Poly and gets blinkers added. Value. 12

12 ALL WE KNOW * Excuses last start but Class 5 looks his caper. 33

13 ALEXANDER HORATIO ** Maiden in solid form but having first run on the Poly and should need easier. 20

14 MURRAYFIELD * Query on the Poly and form not good enough. 50

Race 8

Another top-heavy race where the top four weighted horses should figure heavily in the finish. What’s odd about this race is the fact that one of the equal top weights in BLACK QUAIL is the second emergency but if he does get a start, he can win on the quick back up from placing in this grade last Sunday. But as it stands, not much separates GOLDEN THUNDER, KING ZOUSTAR and FIGHT TO VICTORY and it may be a case of the best ride wins. GOLDEN THUNDER gets a senior 3kg claimer in CK Ng but while due, the wide gate may test. KING ZOUSTAR showed last start that he wins in Class 5 sooner than later and Harry Kasim helps his chances from gate 8, while FIGHT TO VICTORY won on the Poly two back and has the speed to give a big sight from gate 4. Include numbers 5, 6, 10, 11 and 13 in exotics. Betting Strategy – KING ZOUSTAR win.

1 GOLDEN THUNDER *** In very good form without winning and just missed at his last two starts. Claim helps and can win with luck in running. 6.00

2 KING ZOUSTAR *** Used some petrol early so effort to place last start in similar affair was good and goes close from better gate. 3.00

3 FIGHT TO VICTORY *** In form, won on the Poly two back and in this a very long way. 3.00

4 HIGH VOLTAGE * Gate a concern but last run better than the result and will run on late. 33

5 HIDDEN PROMISE ** Like to see over longer again but ran on well last start to place and expect much the same. 12

6 PERFECT ** In solid form and gets blinkers added but may need a tad longer and turf to win. 12

7 SUPER TALENT ** Won a weak one two back but effort last start to place in similar affair to this was good and pay to keep safe. 12

8 MIDDLE KINGDOM * Solid last start and gets Chavez but should need longer. 33

9 SUPERSONICSURPRISE * Battling of late and prefer others. 50

10 TURF BEAUTY ** In solid form without being a winning threat at recent starts on the Poly. Exotics. 20

11 FOUNTAIN OF FAME ** Maiden who battles away solidly as a rule and gate 2 helps. 20

12 SMASH * Just missed two back when running on late but have to take on trust. 33

13 TAVITO ** Only battled last start but gate 1 helps and can include in exotics. 20

14 BLACK QUAIL *** Has the speed to cross from wide gate and in this a very long way. 4.00

Race 9

This Kranji Stakes C Poly mile looks a dead-set raffle and it may pay to have a longer look on the day with the market a good guide. In fact with the likes of Clements and Walker having three runners each and Freedman and Koh with two each, stable support will be a factor with most having winning hopes on best form. Starting from the top, KARISTO doesn’t win out of turn but will find this easier than the Colonial Chief and he does look due with Maia a factor. LUCK OF MASTER and DANCING RAIN also come through the Colonial Chief and also win without surprising. ON LINE looks the best of the Clements trio but like VITTORIA PERFETTA, he is having his first race start on the Poly but both trial like they handle the surface at this level, while IRON RULER is in form and has to be respected with no weight. The chances don’t stop there with SOLO SUN always a show on the Poly and YAYA PAPAYA very much in the mix stepping put to a suitable trip. Betting Strategy – YAYA PAPAYA each-way.

1 KARISTO *** Finds it hard to win but will find this easier than the Colonial Chief and goes close with blinkers to winkers. 4.00

2 VITTORIA PERFETTA *** Having first start on the Poly but in-form and trials like the surface will be no issue. 8.00

3 ON LINE *** Another in-form Clements runner who is having his first start on the Poly but can win with Beuzelin a factor. 3.40

4 SOLO SUN *** Battled last start on the turf and drawn wide but always a show on the Poly and may be value. 12

5 DANCING RAIN *** Form starting to read badly but will find this easier than the Colonial Chief and could surprise at odds on best Poly form. 20

6 MADE IN RUSSIA ** Only battled in this company last start but some hope on best form from gate 2 with winkers to visor. 20

7 YAYA PAPAYA *** Only battled when resuming but appreciates setting up in trip and can win on form from last campaign. 6.00

8 RED ROVER * Blinkers off but battling. 50

9 EAGLE EYE * Placed four back but a long time between wins and may need easier. 33

10 IRON RULER *** Up in Class and drawn wide but gets a claim so worth thought as form very good. 12

11 LUCK OF MASTER *** Ran on well in the Colonial Chief and worth thought on that effort with gate 1 a factor. 12

12 MUSTENGO * Has only battled at his last couple and may need easier. 20

13 BARBEQUE * Battled this campaign. 50

Race 10

It’s no easier for punters in the last with no real standouts and a lot of improvers but GOLDEN FLAME is due and no reason why we jump off him in this Class 4 turf sprint. The 6YO has been a model of consistency in both Class 3 and at his most recent Class 4 run without managing to win but he will be strong late and only needs an ounce of luck to break through here. It gets interesting after that with FEDERATION looking out of form but a significant drop in Class (and drop in distance) has him under notice with a 3kg Hakim claim a factor. NO FUN NO GAIN also benefits form a recent drop in Class and will figure, while IN ALL HIS GLORY was ordinary last start over the mile but he looks better suited here with Oscar Chavez up. The French galloper, STYLE, made a more than solid debut and looks a horse to follow and of the two last start maiden winners, LADY SPRINTBOX looks the pick and she should be more than competitive. Betting Strategy – GOLDEN FLAME each-way.

1 FEDERATION *** Form reads badly but drops significantly in Class and gets tongue-tie on the back of a good trial. Keep safe. 12

2 GOLDEN FLAME *** Never a winning threat last start before running on well late but was due prior and goes close from gate 2. 4.00

3 NO FUN NO GAIN *** Not a mile away in this Company last start and handles the turf so can consider with John Powell a factor. 12

4 STYLE *** Singapore debut on the Poly was good and worth serious thought with Maia up. 4.00

5 IN ALL HIS GLORY *** Freshened after a disappointing run over the mile but winning form prior has him under notice with tongue-tie added. 8.00

6 CRYSTAL SIXTY ** Made the running from wide gate and battled late at Singapore debut but improves for the run. 20

7 SILENT FORCE ** Goes OK but respiratory issues last start and have to take on trust. 33

8 LADY SPRINTBOK *** Won maiden on turf last start and subsequent good trial suggests she is more than competitive here. Keep safe. 6.00

9 MY BOSS ** Not far away at three outings since resuming. Doesn’t win often but will run on with tongue-tie added. 33

10 GALAXY STAR ** Another with respiratory issues last start but form prior solid and could be value with blinkers off. 20

11 MIEJ ** Promising type who was never a threat last start but work late suggests more to offer. Gate will test. 12

12 EUNOS AVE THREE * Took a weak maiden to break through and will find this tougher. 20

13 ALWAYS INNOCENT * Lost form. 100

14 MIRACLE * Solid without being a threat of late and may be looking or easier. 33

15 UNIVERSAL EMPIRE * Did nothing when resuming after long break. Showed ability earlier and recent trial was good but may be better on the Poly. 50

16 LIM’S BESTBREAKER ** Query on the turf but hard to fault recent Poly form so keep safe with one eye on the market. 20
