WAR OF ATHENA
Jack Milner: Will the going have any impact on the outcome of the Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas over 1600m on the Standside track at Turffontein on Saturday?
The debate around the going for the colts’ race seems less of a concern for the fillies who will line up in what is also the first leg of the Wilgerbosdrift SA Triple Tiara.
In fact, come rain, hail, snow or sleet, bookmakers still have made it a two-horse race between Anything Goes and War Of Athena.
Betting World have War Of Athena favourite at 1-1, Anything Goes at 11-10 and the rest available at 14-1 and upwards.
At this stage Stuart Pettigrew’s charge leads the head-to-head 2-1, winning their first two meetings. War Of Athena closed the gap in the Grade 3 Three Troikas Stakes over 1400m at this track but Anything Goes was in need of the run and the contest with Paul Matchett’s charge should be a lot more competitive in this race.
War Of Athena has only had one race in the wet and that was on her second appearance at a racecourse, which has last year in February. That was in a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1160m at Turffontein in which she finished a 3.50-length third behind Dubawi Princess.
Nothing much can really be gleaned from that run but at least she didn’t “fall into a hole” in the wet.
Anything Goes has not yet raced in yielding going so we will only get our answer on Saturday.
However, Pettigrew confirmed last week his charge was only around 80% fit in her last start and had come on three to four lengths since then.
“She’s spot on and is a different horse.”
At the time, Pettigrew had been convinced the meeting would be postponed for a week so he must have had a few contingency plans in mind.
In his column last week, jockey Muzi Yeni was brimming with confidence about the chances of War Of Athena but he does have respect for Anything Goes and has included both in his Pick 6.
Of the balance Gee For Go looks best and is the one to include in Swingers and Trifectas.
