Hakim Kamaruddin

Larry Foley: Malaysian apprentice jockey Hakim Kamaruddin added another four winners to his 2021 total last weekend at Kranji in Singapore.

With Vlad Duric on sick leave and Ruan Maia settling in Hong Kong, the apprentice also known as the “Kelantan Kid” is the jockey to follow at Kranji on Saturday.

He can open his account in Race 1 with Winning Legend who seems well placed to win. His best ride of the night, however, may just be a maiden – Our Secret Weapon – in Race 8.

The three-year-old has been disappointing since placing on debut on the Poly behind the smart Tuesday, but given he had a crack at the Golden Horseshoe and now finds himself in the weakest of races, he should really win and continue the Hakim golden run.

Most of his other mounts look solid Eachway hopes, but one should rather not go against Hakim getting at least two of them home.

Elsewhere on the card, a relatively “new” jockey in the Singapore racing ranks in Danny Beasley could also be a rider to follow.

The popular Australian hung up the saddle some four years back but remained in Singapore working for the Dan Meagher stable.

But in Beasley’s own words – “the spark never quite went out”- and the affable Aussie can return a winner with perhaps Lim’s Zoom his best chance in the lucky last.

Best Bets: LIM’S BESTBREAKER Race 5 win; SENOR DON Race 9 win; MIGHTY EMPEROR Race 4 value.

Jackpot: R40:

Leg 1 (Race 7) 1, 2, 7, 8, 13

Leg 2 (Race 8) 7

Leg 3 (Race 9) 1, 2, 12, 13

Leg 4 (Race 10) 1, 5

Race 1

Selections: 5 WINNING LEGEND; 2 FAST AND FEARLESS; 1 CATCH THE TIGER; 3 GOLDEN DASH

Plenty of winning hopes in the opener with three Class droppers that could improve and go close and a few others with their foot on the till in similar affairs. Of the Class droppers, FAST AND FEARLESS looks the best hope with a handy Iskandar 3kg claim. GOLDEN DASH will also grow a leg down in grade and gate 1 helps his cause. OLD MATE BUZZER comes into this with four duck eggs in the form book but given he has won at both starts in Class 5, he has to be respected. The 1200m could test late. Of those due, WINNING LEGEND showed last start why the Poly is his caper and a 3kg claim for the red-hot Hakim could be the winning move. CATCH THE TIGER is back in trip but is also due and a forward run is expected, while most others can be included in exotics on best form. Betting Strategy: WINNING LEGEND win.

Race 2

Selections: 2 IMA; 6 BEN WADE; 1 CRANIUM; 12 WIND OF DUBAI

The big question is how short IMA starts in the betting? I’m thinking no one will tip or bet against him in this moderate maiden field and while we will try to make a case for a couple of the others, he should be very hard to beat and should look the winner a long way out on what we saw at his Singapore debut. Who beats him? BEN WADE was supported but very disappointing on debut but gets a tongue-tie and is worth another look on trial form, while WIND OF DUBAI, MARINE VANGUARD and MORE THAN OIL all come off last start placings so have to be considered. The interesting runner is CRANIUM who makes his long-awaited Singapore debut and while he is a 7YO maiden, his recent local trial was good enough to include somewhere in this field. Betting Strategy: IMA win.

Race 3

Selections: 6 STARLIGHT; 3 THE MARKSMAN; 1 KHARISMA; 12 TRIPLE BOWL

We all love undefeated horses and STARLIGHT looks like he can make it three-from-three in this Class 4 Poly sprint. The 3YO looks well weighted with 56kg and while drawn wide, his two wins have been impressive. Expect a short but hopefully sweet price. He will, however, need to be as good as we think he is as this race has depth. THE MARKSMAN has shown more than enough in two starts in Singapore to win a race like this while KHARISMA is in form, gets a handy 3kg claim and should figure. Throw TRIPLE BOWL, SUPER SMART and WEALTH ELITE into the winning mix. FIREWORKS might be up in Class, but he is in winning form and could show up with Hakim on board. The first emergency – TANGIBLE – arrives via Hong Kong and his local trials seem good enough to keep safe with the market the best guide. Betting Strategy: STARLIGHT win.

Race 4

Selections: 3 TIGER LEAP; 1 MIGHTY EMPEROR; 4 HWASONG; 8 TSURIAN

A Class 5 raffle over 1800m and while there are a few horses in honest enough form to follow with some confidence, it may be a veteran down in Class that is hardest to beat. The horse in question is MIGHTY EMPEROR and while his recent form is patchy at best, his Poly form is better than Class 5 and he should be value. Conversely, a maiden in TIGER LEAP having his first start on the Poly can also win. The 4YO is due to win, gets John Powell from gate 3 and his early trials suggest the Poly will be no issue whatsoever. Most others pick themselves on Class 5 Poly form with last start winner TSURIAN a big show to win again, while HWASONG and BLITZ POWER will be strong late and must be respected. Go wider in exotics in what is an open race. Betting Strategy: MIGHTY EMPEROR Eachway.

Race 5

Selections: 1 LIM’S BESTBREAKER; 5 METAL WORLD; 9 GOLD KINGDOM; 13 ASAAD

Plenty of winning hopes in this race but connections of LIM’S BESTBREAKER would be very much looking forward to seeing him get over the mile and he can win. The 4YO loves the Poly and gets to jump from a good gate, so given his work late after excuses last start over 1200m on the turf, he may be hard to hold out. A last start winner in METAL WORLD is also worth serious thought as he has a Poly win to his name and gate 1 suggests Simon Kok gives him every chance. The red-hot Hakim jumps on another last start winner in GOLD KINGDOM and while he is up in Class, he won easy, has handled this grade previously and may even be value. SHEPARD’S HYMN didn’t see out the 1800m last start so the Poly mile looks ideal with Beuzelin up, while MERYL appreciates a solid first up run and can win on the back of a good trial. Both emergencies – ASAAD and AXEL – can win without surprising. Betting Strategy: LIM’S BESTBREAKER win.

Race 6

Selections: 1 SMILING PROUD; 4 STAR FIFTYTWO; 5 NEW GARDEN; 13 HOST THE NATION

An ugly Class 5 and hard to be confident especially when two of the fancies in SMILING PROUD and STAR FIFTYTWO are dropping back from unplaced turf mile runs. But both are versatile and may be better than most horses in this weak field with SMILING PROUD probably the pick of the two with Hakim retaining the ride and a recent win to his name. Of the others, NEW GARDEN broke his maiden status last start on the Poly over 1100m so obviously the race suits and while drawn wide in 12, he can win. The first emergency – HOST THE NATION – has found a weak enough field to have a say if he gets a start. Betting Strategy: small win SMILING PROUD.

Race 7

Selections: 7 BE YOU; 8 WHIZ FIZZ; 2 SAVVY COMMAND; 1 SAGE

No real standout in this Novice but a couple of handy 3YO’s in BE YOU and WHIZ FIZZ look in well enough at the race conditions to win. BE YOU has the advantage of three good runs under his belt and with blinkers added from gate 2 on the back of a good trial, he can make amends for two close-up placings. The well-named WHIZ FIZZ won well at his race debut on the Poly and looks a horse to follow with Beuzelin a factor from gate 9. Of the others, SAGE also won well enough on debut to think he goes OK but that field lacked depth, so the market is the best guide. SAVVY COMMAND didn’t handle the wet last start and he has to be respected first up on what he showed prior to that run. Keep the first emergency – SKY EYE – safe and use the market as best guide on the others. Betting Strategy: BE YOU win.

Race 8

Selections: 7 OUR SECRET WEAPON; 6 LIM’S SHOT; 3 GOLDEN THUNDER; 5 HIDDEN PROMISE

With none of the regular Class 5 battlers jumping off the page to win this Poly sprint, a maiden in OUR SECRET WEAPON looks the one to beat. The 3YO has been disappointing since placing behind the smart TUESDAY on debut, but Class 5 looks his easiest assignment thus far with the booking of Hakim a pointer and gate 3 a bonus. Who beats him? The stablemate HIDDEN PROMISE is in very solid form and gate 1 helps his cause, while GOLDEN THUNDER hasn’t drawn as well (9) but he looks due and should figure. RETALLICA has drawn the car park but could show up first up after a bleeding attack and STAR BULLET is some show sans blinkers back on the Poly. The biggest threat to OUR SECRET WEAPON could be LIM’S SHOT who ran on super last start and has drawn better for this so keep very safe. Betting Strategy: OUR SECRET WEAPON win.

Race 9

Selections: 2 SENOR DON; 13 ON LINE; 1 VITTORIA PERFETTA; 12 YAYA PAPAYA

A fascinating Class 3 Poly mile and while the last start winner – VITTORIA PERFETTA – looks the benchmark with Saifudin retaining the ride, SENOR DON could be the best horse in the race and happy to have him on top. A Group winner in Argentina, SENOR DON took a while to show his best in Singapore, but it also took a while to get him onto the Poly and no surprise (given his breeding) that would be the case. His work late over an unsuitable trip last start was good and he should be very hard to hold out over the mile in this company. It may be the first emergency – ON LINE – who is the biggest danger and with Beuzelin booked by Mike Clements, expect a very big run if given the opportunity. Clements also trains VITTORIA PERFETTA who obviously can win and IRON RULER who looks a battler’s chance. YAYA PAPAYA worth one more look with blinkers back on and go wider in exotics. Betting Strategy: SENOR DON win.

Race 10

Selections: 5 TUESDAY; 1 LIM’S ZOOM; 4 GOLDEN FLAME; 2 SONGGONG HERA

While we can make a case for two or three of the others, TUESDAY looks hard to beat in the lucky last. The 3YO’s only bad run was on the turf two starts back but showed last start when winning easily on the Poly in this company that he is a horse with a big future and should win this. He has drawn wide and has 4.5kg extra to carry, so we can consider the likes of GOLDEN FLAME who keeps Hakim and his 3kg claim and will very much appreciate being back on the Poly. LIM’S ZOOM can also win with gate 1 and the experienced “newcomer” in Danny Beasley a factor with a very forward run expected. Of the rest, keep SONGGONG HERA safe as he showed enough at his Singapore debut with support on the Poly to think he improves at odds and the veteran FLAK JACKET is in honest form. Betting Strategy: TUESDAY win.
