JOAO MOREIRA

Luke Middlebrook: Race-by-race previews of Sunday’s race meeting at Sha Tin racecourse in Hong Kong.

Race 1: Iron King strong trainer and jockey combination and races first up off a good trial when not tested. Should be winning in this class soon. The Full Bloom change of trainer recently and watch betting as no trial to go off. More than capable of winning on his best form however. Anonyma second start in this grade after dropping in class and could improve with Moreira in the saddle but draws wide. Money- more recent runs have been encouraging and can run well. Who’s Horse has early speed and can give some cheek from the low draw.

Race 2: Pleasant Endeavor impressive debut winner who is a big winning chance again after sizzling sectionals first-up. Noble Desire looks overdue for a win and enters this race in good form and shouldn’t have many excuses with Moreira the saddle. Bella Baby had excuses last start and forget the run. Should improve in this race. Amazing Rocky recent barrier trial was good suggesting an improved run can be expected. Summit Cheers newcomer who has trialled well for debut and watch the betting here.

Race 3: Beauty Smile looks the one to beat based on current form after stringing together two impressive wins on end in tougher races. Drops in class here so has top weight of 60.5kg to overcome however. The Crown video replay showed last run was very good. Winning Method finished powerfully with fastest sectional time ranking last start and loos a good place chance. Highly Proactive solid effort last start and must be rated chance here. Beauty Rush will be suited by the rise in distance and can run well.

Race 4: Zone D racing well with excellent sectional time rankings and appears ready to win third-up from the good barrier draw. Fortune Master every chance last start but still ran a good race and Moreira sticks with but a wide barrier is the concern. El Jefe last run was better than it reads and do not dismiss. Value chance here. My Ecstatic has shown ability and gets his chance to win here after an ill-judged ride last time. All Joyful drawn well in stall 1 and should gain a nice run in transit for Maia. Place clams.

Race 5: Beauty Cheers recent trials have been quite good and looks a good chance to score for the Size/Moreira combo. Jumps from barrier No 1 and should prove hard to beat from there. The Anomaly caused a surprise last start when winning at a massive dividend on debut, but based on the win, he’s a chance to go well again. Free Foal has trialled well since a nice debut run and must be considered. Co-partner Ambition has trialled well for debut and should be rated a chance. Enchanting Start fresh up from a break and recent trial form is okay.

Race 6: Green Envy racing consistently of late and expect another big run with Moreira and Fownes teaming up here (52% top 3 strike rate in the past 12 months). Bright Kid racing well with excellent sectional time rankings. Winning Steed narrowly beaten last start and goes close here from a good barrier drawn in barrier 3. Ultra Express last start winner who re- mains in the same grade. All For St Paul’s a fast beginner who can run well if he finds an easy lead and he can give some cheek out in front.

Race 7: Charity Fun scored a big win last start and it will pay to keep following. Appears to be a talented stayer in the making and is bidding for handicaps points here to make the Derby field next month. Above changed stables recently and has improved. The main danger to the favourite. California Ten recent barrier trial was good suggesting an improved run can be expected and he maps well from barrier No 4. Arrogant good performance when storming home for third place last start. Awe recent runs have been encouraging and can run well.

Race 8: Fantastic Way impressive debut winner at odds of $1.40 who is hard to beat here despite rising in class. Draws wide but appears to have the early toe to cut across. Keep You Warm looks a solid good chance based on last start and will have all the favours jumping from stall 1. Mighty Valor goes well first-up from a break and should be respected. Wine And Wine changed trainer and the recent trial win was impressive. Should be an improver at his second Hong Kong start. Big Fortune racing consistently of late and expect another big run.

Race 9: Joyful Fortune is becoming costly but had genuine excuses last start – pulling up with mucus – and can be given another chance here as Moreira remains in the saddle. Trillion Win turned in a very nice debut run and looks to have good ability; however, Victor Wong, who is 0 from 143 rides, is in the saddle here and that begs some questions. Valiant Dream looks overdue for a win and enters this race in good form. Winner Method very impressive debut performance and looks to have plenty of talent – can measure up. Super Axiom talented galloper who is resuming from a break.

Race 10: Silver Express a bit erratic after running about in the straight last start, costing him the race, but blinkers are added here, Moreira replaces Teetan and he gets his chance to atone. Regency Bo Bo racing well with excellent sectional time rankings and he enters this race nearing another win. Uncle Steve recent barrier trial was good suggesting an improved run can be expected from barrier 4. New Future rising in class and meets better quality horses but can measure up. Xiang Yin finished powerfully with fastest sectional time ranking last start off a slow early speed.
