SUMMER PUDDING WINS AGAIN
Jack Milner: Summer Pudding won her 11th race in just 12 outings when she took top honours in the Grade 1 HSH Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes over 1600m at Turffontein on Saturday.
Ridden as usual by Warren Kennedy, Paul Peter’s charge hit the front 250m from home and then under hands ride, stayed on to beat Running Brave by 0.75 lengths. Another two lengths back in third came Lady Of Steel with pacemaker Wisteria Walk another 0.75 lengths away in fourth.
Summer Pudding, who started at odds of 4-10, is owned by Mauritzfontein (Pty) Ltd and runs in the colours of nominee Jessica Jell. This race produced the daughter of Silvano’s fourth Grade 1 victory.
Wisteria Walk ensured a brisk pace and led by a couple of lengths from Kelpie with Summer Pudding in third. In the straight Wisteria Walk tried to hold her lead but Kennedy moved Summer Pudding in for the kill down the inside while Running Brave and Lady Of Steel began to kick on.
But Summer Pudding had built up a winning lead and while Running Brave and Muzi Yeni ran on well, Summer Pudding had the race in the bag and was being wound down by Kennedy.
“She’s just magnificent!” exclaimed Kennedy.
“Bar the one blimp on her record book in Cape Town, she is just the ultimate.
“We love to see champions win, and she just keeps delivering.
“She’s captured the hearts of everyone in racing and even out of racing. She gives you goose bumps. She just keeps delivering.
Peter paid tribute to the filly. “It’s full marks to Summer Pudding. Horses like this come up so rarely in anyone’s lifetime and I was just blessed to be in the right place at the right time.”
Talking about the race, Peter added: “I think 1600m was way too short for her. We took a liberty running her in this race but we knew we could depend on her and she doesn’t let us down.”
