Jack Milner: Trainer Paul Peter and jockey Warren Kennedy joined forces to win both Grade 2 feature races on the Turffontein inside track on Sunday.
The meeting had to be postponed by a day after heavy rains made the track dangerous for racing on Saturday. But the sun came out and the meeting went ahead without any problems.
Five-times Grade 1 winner Got The Greenlight came in for strong betting support in the Grade 2 Joburg Spring Challenge over 1450m and vied for favourite with MK’s Pride who eventually won that battle and went off at 10-7 with Got The Greenlight at 5-2.
Mr Flood made the pace from Dockofthebay while MK’s Pride had the run of the race in third. Bingwa was caught wide and moved up on the outside of the favourite while Got The Greenlight raced near the rear.
In the straight Bingwa committed early and took the lead with MK’s Pride coming up on his inside. Craig Zackey moved Got The Greenlight into contention along the inside rail and it appeared he sweep past them all. However, MK’s Pride would not be denied and fought on gamely to beat Bingwa by 0.60 lengths with Got The Greenlight a further 0.90 lengths back in third.
Under Your Spell was all the rage to win the Grade 2 Joburg Spring F&M Challenge over the same distance but despite looking dangerous early in the straight, she was unable to get to terms with frontrunning Big Burn, who proved relentless under Kennedy.
Big Burn, who is a full-sister to Australia-bound Catch Twentytwo, went on to beat Under Your Spell by 1.60 lengths, with Thumbs Up just 0.50 lengths back in third.
Under Your Spell went off favourite at 9-20 with Big Burn supported in from 5-1 to eventually start at 33-10.
Peter won five races on the day, four with Kennedy up and another with apprentice Joshwin Solomons in the irons.
