ANTON MARCUS

Jack Milner: Running Rifles looks the best bet on Sunday’s card at Hollywoodbets Greyville card. Justin Snaith’s charge has been a bit costly to follow but should get it right in Race 2, a Maiden Plate over 1400m on the turf track.

Snaith has been sending out a barrage of winners from his satellite yard in KwaZulu-Natal and the Vercingetorix gelding should have no problems in disposing of a mostly inexperienced bunch from a much better draw than in his previous start.

He was a touch unlucky last time when carried in late and jockey Anton Marcus is fully expected to get it right on this occasion, especially from No 4 draw.

Running Rifles has only raced five times, finishing unplaced in his first two runs at Kenilworth.

However, he turned the corner since arriving in KZN although he has been frustrating for punters as he has finished runner-up in all three starts in the province.

On breeding one would have believed Born To Perform has been aptly named. By champion sire Silvano out of Dancer’s Daughter, who dead-heated with Pocket Power in the Durban July among a number of other superb wins, he had all the right genes.

In fact, after his first 13 starts he looked to be on the right track, notching up six wins along the way. His 13th run was in the Listed Kings Cup which he won, but it was an unlucky No 13 as he has failed to win a race since then.

But that could all change on Sunday when he lines up in Race 6, a MR 87 Handicap over 1600m.

He is back over the course and distance that saw him win the Kings Cup in which he beat Tristful. That was off a merit rating of 96 but his rating has now dropped to 85 and he is not facing the same standard of runner.

It is interesting that Warren Kennedy is the only jockey to have won on him, but he is unavailable and that job has now been given to S’manga Khumalo. The former champion jockey has ridden Born To Perform, almost two years ago. It was over this course and distance, and he was beaten just 0.30 lengths into second place by The Dazzler.

Dennis Bosch’s yard is in top form which adds impetus to Born To Perform’s chances.
