Jack Milner: The scratching of Motown Magic on Monday morning has paved the way for Rex Union to strike in Race 4 at Hollywoodbets Greyville.
Motown Magic was withdrawn by trainer Mike de Kock suffering from a off-fore swollen fetlock so that open the door for Dean Kannemeyer’s charge to notch his first win at Greyville since 2020 in this MR 85 Handicap over 2000m.
Rex is the Latin word for king and Rex Union can make himself king of the Polytrack on Monday.
The four-year-old gelding by Duke Of Marmalade out of champion mare Beach Beauty started his career in KwaZulu-Natal and won his maiden on the Polytrack at Greyville.
He has had one run in KwaZulu-Natal this season, going off 15-10 favourite for the Highland Night Cup (Non-Black Type) over 2400m on the turf track, finishing a 1.10-length third behind Imperial Ruby.
That run would have brought him on nicely, but he will carry 5kg more. Keagan de Melo takes the ride.
His main danger looks to be Sean Tarry-trained Earl who ran a 2.20-length second behind Airways Law in his first run on the Polytrack last time.
With jockey Richard Fourie still medically indisposed, apprentice Gabriell Pieterse has been engaged to ride Earl and will take a further 2.5kg off his back.
